The Mayflower Primary School Red Cross Link has members from P3 to P6. The Link Training Curriculum covers Year 1 (Primary 3), Year 2 (Primary 4) and Year 3 (Primary 5 & 6). The teachers-in-charge are Mdm Tricia Wee and Mrs Wendy Chua.
Mayflower Primary School’s Red Cross Society is a part of the International Red Cross. The Red Cross Society aims to promote and encourage the participation of the young in first aid duties, welfare service projects and fund
raising activities. Members meet on Fridays between 7.30am to 9.30am. During these sessions, members come together to learn and practice new skills, some of which are described below. Evacuation, or emergency rescue, refers to the procedure of transporting a casualty from a dangerous location, such as a burning and collapsing building, to a safer place, like the first aid base or the hospital. Our links learn the proper way to carry out appropriate evacuation methods, which in turn minimises the time taken to rescue a casualty in an emergency. In life threatening circumstances, evacuation often precedes first aid treatment to casualties;hence its importance in the life saving process. First Aid is the immediate aid given to a person who has suddenly taken ill or is injured before professional paramedics arrive. Our links are well equipped with basic first aid skills enabling them to be active and responsible citizens.
The Mayflower Primary School Red Cross Link has been awarded the Excellent Unit award and Community Services Award.
Footdrill is an important aspect of all Uniformed Groups. The main aim of footdrill is to instill discipline in our cadets, and at the same time, promote esprit de corps. Footdrill sessions are conducted for all cadets regularly during trainings.
Red Cross Knowledge (RCK) lessons provide the opportunity for cadets to gain a deeper understanding about the history of the Red Cross. Besides that, cadets also learn about the current projects, roles and responsibilities of the Red Cross throughout the world. As part of service to the school, First Aid Leaders take turns weekly to upkeep appropriate first aid supplies in the school compound. Members also provide first aid service during school events like Sports Day as well as extend their services to the public annually through fund-raising projects like Red Cross Charity Draw. In 2006, some pupils took part in the Sea Shore Life Programme which is a beach litter-picking activity organized by NEA. Some pupils were also involved in the visit to an elderly home, Xin Yuan Community Care , where our young pupils brought joy and laughter to the old folks with their singing performance and a food collection. It was an eye-opener for the pupils as they felt a sense of accomplishment seeing how much they can do as a child. This was definitely in line with the Red Cross motto “To serve one another”! We also actively take part in camps and competitions organized by Singapore Red Cross Society HQ. This is where our link members get their chance to interact with the many link members from other schools. In 2007, we were the Top 5 schools which got into the finals of the Talentime held by Red Cross Youth Singapore. As part of our service to the school, we have also provided first aid service for school events like Sports Day, Swimming Carnival and also responsible for the first aid boxes in the school. We also extended our service to the public annually through fund-raising projects like Red Cross Charity Draw, thus fulfilling the Red Cross motto: To serve one another. We hope our link members will be disciplined, team-spirited, caring and competent pupils and go on to join Red Cross Youth as cadets in secondary schools. Last but not least, we will adhere to the Red Cross motto: To serve one another.
