National Education is part of a holistic education. It aims to develop national cohesion, cultivate the instinct for survival as a nation and instill in our students, confidence in our nation's future. It also emphasizes on cultivating a sense of belonging and emotional rootedness to Singapore.
The following National Education messages are incorporated into our curriculum in the teaching of all subjects:
v NE #1 : Singapore is our homeland; this is where we belong
Treasure our heritage and take pride in shaping our own unique way of life
v NE #2 : We must preserve racial and religious harmony
While we value our diversity, we will remain a united people.
v NE #3 : We must uphold meritocracy and incorruptibility
We provide opportunity for all, according to their ability and effort.
v NE #4 : No one owes us a living
We must find our own way to survive and prosper, turning challenge into
opportunity.
v NE #5 : We must ourselves defend Singapore
We are proud to defend Singapore ourselves, no one else is responsible for
our security and well-being.
v NE #6 We have confidence in our future
United, determined and well-prepared, we have what it takes to build a bright
future for ourselves, and to progress together as one nation.
Besides organizing Heritage trail to Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little Indian to deepen understanding of the 3 races in Singapore, the school also commemorates 4 core NE events to reinforced the 6 NE messages.
International Friendship day
International Friendship Day is commemorated on the third working Friday of Term 2. International Friendship Day is a day dedicated to the understanding of Singapore's relationship with neighbouring countries and beyond. It aims to sensitize our pupils to the geo-political realities inherent in Singapore, as well as nurture in our pupils the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people.
Racial Harmony Day
Racial Harmony Day is commemorated on 21 July. On this day in 1964, Singapore saw racial riots. Racial Harmony Day serves to remind our pupils that social division cost us dearly and that race and religion are potential fault lines in Singapore society.
At MFPS, it is a day to reflect on, and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of cultures and heritages. Pupils should learn to make friends with people of other races and religions and not make fun of people who are different. They should also learn that in Singapore, people are treated equally regardless of their race and religion and they should also do the same.
The RHD theme for year 2011, “HOME: Joint Hopes, Shared Memories” seeks to bring together projections of our future as a nation (Joint Hopes) and share recollections of our past moments of joy with our friends from all the different races (Shared Memories). Pupils had a fun- filled and meaningful learning experiences about the different cultures in Singapore during recesses.
Total Defence Day
15 February marks the British surrender of Singapore to the Japanese during World War 2. The theme for the Total Defence 2012 campaign is “It’s My Turn”. It conveys the message that we must not take for granted the peace and stability that we currently enjoy. It is a result of the strong foundation created by Singaporeans’ involvement and participation in Total Defence. Thus, this year, it is now our turn to play our part and build on what our forefathers have done to maintain Singapore’s security.
The commemoration in Mayflower Primary School started off with an assembly talk on the importance of Total Defence Day and the five aspects, that is, Military Defence, Civil Defence, Economic Defence, Social Defence, Psychological Defence. The pupils also enjoyed the video clips of N.E.mation! 6, which centred on the theme “NS: From Father to Son”.
This was then followed by a fire drill.
During the recesses, the pupils had a first-hand experience on how it felt like to eat plain porridge during war and appreciate the importance of food and water. The canteen vendors only sold porridge and mineral water during recess. The food rationing exercise was truly a memorable and invaluable experience for our pupils!

National Day
National Day marks our emergence as an independent country in the community of nations. The school conducts a 30-minute National Day Observance Ceremony to bring to the pupils a greater sense of the historical importance and solemnity of National Day. This is followed by activities to commemorate the country’s independence and nationhood.
The theme for 2011 is ‘ Majulah! The Singapore Spirit.’ . Majulah means “Onward!”. It represents our strength, energy and dynamism to continually strive towards building a better Singapore. Pupils expressed what Singapore Spirit means to them through drawings, creating cheers and writing reflections.
