YOG Efforts Minimize

Our YOG Efforts Minimize

Singapore is privileged to host the Youth Olympics Games in year 2010. As stated in the official Singapore Youth Olympic Website, our island is a global success story with a rich blend of different cultures, races and mixed of ages. We are also a young nation which understands the importance of young people and thus, we invest heavily in our next generation.

To prepare Mayflower Primary School pupils in understanding and welcoming the Youth Olympics Games, our school has come up with a series of programs and activities for our pupils.

We have assembly talks that cover the basic aspects of Olympic History, Values and Symbols. Our pupils were encouraged to reflect upon how they feel about Singapore being the Host of the First YOG and they also come up with suggestions on how Singapore can be a good host.

The Primary Five pupils also designed and painted a Sports Mural at the parade square.

In May, a Mini Olympics Sports Carnival was organized for our P4-P6 pupils. For the first time, the pupils experienced an Olympic Torch Relay as the opening  ceremony.

During International Friendship Day, activities were conducted to familiarise our pupils with some of the participating countries. They learned through quizzes i.e. match past Olympics Games host cities to their flags, research and presentation of these countries as  well as designing creative sports wear for the athletes.

The Olympic Themes can also be delivered through PE lessons. Some of our PE lessons are used to educate our pupils on sportsmanship, teamwork and responsibility in sports safety issues. We hope to promote fair play in sports and to teach our pupils, why athletes should not dope.

Through these series of fun-filled activities, we hope that our pupils not only have a taste of how it feels like to participate in a sport, but also encourage them to exercise regularly.  We believe that by year 2010, Mayflower Primary School pupils will be geared up and all ready to welcome the Youth Olympics Games.

We have a new feature wall dedicated to the Olympics. The exhibits introduce the Olympic History, Symbols, Events and Values. It is a space for our pupils to discover the spirit of Olympism.
