Vision

Our vision is to be a learner-centred, future-oriented English Department nurturing 21st century communicators. The department vision supports MOE’s efforts in delivering a student-centric education and is aligned to the goal of the school’s strategic plan to engender the culture of academic and character excellence (Strategic Thrust 1 and 4) entrenched in its engaging and future-oriented curriculum.

Mission

Our mission, which is providing a literacy-rich environment to raise the language competency of all students and to enrich their language learning experience, ensures that our students have a good grounding in English, underpinned by the 21st century competencies, to continue to have an edge in a competitive global environment.

To support this wider strategic objective of preparing ‘Our Pupils, Exemplary Citizens of Tomorrow’, coupled with the deep-rooted belief in the importance of ‘Enhancing Staff Competency and Well-being (MFPS’ Strategic Thrust 5)’, the English Department pledges to play the pivotal role of strengthening the communicative effectiveness and cultivating deep pedagogical expertise in English Language (EL) teachers in the school.

MFPS EL Curriculum Framework (2012)

The MFPS EL Curriculum Framework (2012), which sets out the interlocking elements that form and build the literacy-rich environment, supports the vision and mission of the English Department and the school’s Strategic Thrust 1: Academic Excellence and Strategic Thrust 4: Character Excellence.

The Desired Student Outcomes for EL Proficiency in MFPS

  • Confident people who are discerning in judgment, think independently and critically and are able to speak, write and represent in internationally acceptable English, the lingua franca of the world, that is grammatical, fluent, mutually intelligible and appropriate for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures.

  • Self-directed learners who question, reflect, persevere and take responsibility for their own learning and are able to reframe current understanding to accommodate new knowledge gained from the contexts in the wide range of texts from print and non-print sources.

  • Active contributors who are innovative, exercise initiative, strive for excellence and are able to work effectively in teams in understanding and using Standard English grammar and vocabulary accurately, appropriately and collaboratively to communicate meaning and achieve impact.

  • Concerned Citizens who acquire knowledge of Singapore society and gain awareness of the global community by reading and viewing a variety of literary and information texts and interacting with different racial-cultural groups. They are able to apply knowledge of language to interpret, analyse and reflect upon the values inherent within the construction of spoken and written texts and to integrate information to develop new understandings adhering to ethical guidelines and conventions when accessing information and using conventions of the English Language to communicate with the diverse community.
